Healthy parks make healthy
neighborhoods. We're a nonprofit community
organization whose sole mission is park
beautification, preservation and vitality. Our
activities include keeping Dag
Hammarskjold Plaza clean and green and
organizing events that foster community. As
stewards of the park, we work in partnership
with NYC Parks and Recreation, city officials
and other organizations who share our commitment
to public space. Won't you join us?
Dag
Hammarskjold Plaza is a NYC park located in the heart of
Manhattan on East 47th Street between United Nations Plaza (1st
Ave.) and 2nd Avenue.
Features
The
block-long park features an elegant promenade leading to the UN,
bordered by six fountains and a woodland sanctuary known as the
Katharine Hepburn Garden.
History
The
property was originally ceded to the City of New York as
parkland when the UN was being sited. However, the space served
as little more than a demonstration ground until the mid-1990s,
when the community spurred an ambitious reconstruction of the
park.
Architect
The
design by NYC Parks architect George Vellonakis transformed a
barren plaza into an inviting public space that serves local
residents and the international diplomatic community.
Neighborhood
The Gateway to the United Nations, the park is in the neighborhood of Turtle Bay.
